Daemen's History & Political Science Department is proud to announce our role as a partner organization for the event, "From Suffrage to the ERA: Equity, Resiliency, Activism," which will explore the history, significance, and potential impact of the proposed Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the Constitution.
The
event will take place from 9:30 to 12:00 on Saturday, October 2, in the Wick Social Room. (In-person registration
starts at 9:00.) It is free and open to the public, but registration is required. The
event will be presented in a hybrid format (in person and streamed live
on Zoom). Register here: https://bit.ly/SuffragetoERA
In addition to exploring women's fight
for voting rights, participants will address the impact of the
pandemic on women (the She-session) and the current movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. The event commemorates the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment that empowered women to vote (enacted in 1920) along with the upcoming centennial of the ERA (introduced into Congress in 1923), thus connecting past, present, and future issues related to women's full equality in American society.
Historian Sally Roesch Wagner |
The format of the event includes a keynote speech by Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner, followed by a panel discussion exploring the ERA's impact on different aspects of women's lives. Dr. Wagner is well known for her public lectures and is the author of several books on the women's rights movement. Panelists will address specific issues impeding women's pursuit of full equality: violence against women, economic inequality, women's health and reproductive justice, and women's under-representation in government. Panelists include Karen King (Erie
County Commissioner of Public Advocacy); Ava Thomas (Operations Manager for the
Family Justice Center); Shanaz Butt (Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at
the University of Sciences in Philadelphia); and Diana Cihak (founder of
WomenElect and WEPac).
The corporate sponsor of the event is the West Herr Auto Group. Partners
